About LA+

LA+ is an exhibition series that platforms artists and cultural practitioners from the La Perouse Aboriginal Community. Presented in dialogue with the broader First Nations arts and cultural ecosystem, LA+ is a site of self-determination, collaboration and exchange.

LA+ 001 | McKenzie + Croft

A homecoming of photographic works by Eora/Anaiwan artist Peter McKenzie + (Gurindji/Malngin/Mudburra Peoples; Anglo-Australian/Chinese/German/Irish/Scottish heritage) artist Brenda L Croft.

McKenzie’s archive spans more than six decades of creative output, much of it rooted in the La Perouse Aboriginal Community. Displayed alongside ceramics, drawing, painting and guitar-making, we are gifted a raw insight into the dedication, humour and loyalty of the La Perouse United Football Club.

The ferocity of McKenzie’s photographs is matched by Croft’s Naabámi (thou shall/will see): Barangaroo (army of me). Returning to La Perouse, a series of 25 Dharawal women and girls with cultural connections to coastal Sydney honours Barangaroo, the Cammeraygal Warrior woman who acts as an ancestral guide for those represented in these photographs.

In tandem, these images speak to the core of that which keeps the La Perouse Aboriginal Community strong – unwavering care and unapologetic resilience.
