Sesquicentenary Oration

The Hon. Bob Carr

Help us mark the 150th anniversary of the La Perouse Cable connection!

The sesquicentenary oration will be delivered by The Hon Bob Carr, the longest continuously serving Premier in the history of New South Wales and former Australian Foreign Minister. Mr Carr brings a historical insight to the event, having opened the museum in 1988.

In this special address, Bob Carr will explore the Cable Station’s pivotal role in linking Australia to the world, situating its technological, political, and cultural significance within a broader national and global context.

The event will be officially opened with a welcome by the Mayor of Randwick, Councillor Dylan Parker, underscoring the importance of the site to local heritage and civic life.

Visitors are also invited to experience a Morse telegraph display at the Cable Station on Saturday 21 February. Volunteers from the Telstra Telecommunications Museum will demonstrate historic telecommunications equipment and translate visitors’ messages into Morse code, bringing the early days of global communication to life.

This sesquicentenary program offers a rare opportunity to reflect on 150 years of innovation, connection, and history at La Perouse celebrating the people, ideas, and technologies that helped shape Australia’s place in the world.
